The village of St. Estephe sits on the left bank of the Gironde, smack in the middle of some of the most coveted wine real estate in the world. The area is known for making austere, classic Bordeaux that often costs far more than the average consumer likes to spend on a bottle of wine. So when we saw that Chateau la Peyre, an impressive St. Estephe producer, had declassified some of their wine down to Haut Medoc and were pricing it to sell, we were very excited. This is quintessential left bank Bordeaux at a fraction of the price. Blackberry, cassis, cedar and graphite combine with a classic structure and profile to make a superb wine.
